After 20 years living and working in Spain now I have seen many British people say that there is no work in Spain or that it’s impossible to find work in Spain.
There are 2 main reasons why they say this.
First of all there is work in Spain if you have the skills that are in demand and the right attitude to find jobs here. The problem is that most don’t have the skills or the attitude so struggle finding work in Spain.
Reason 1 is most British people who move to Spain speak very little Spanish or none at all and it would be very hard to find work in any country where you can’t speak the language.
Reason 2 is they don’t have the skills that are in demand here. So many British people move to Spain and are looking for casual work so bar work or cleaning jobs and these are everywhere, very low paid and hundreds of British and Spanish people after these jobs.
If you have found it hard to find work in the UK then you will find it hard here in Spain.
Spain is now starting to look outside of Spain for construction workers as the government have just announced a shortage of workers with skills in this industry. Carpenters, plumbers electricians and construction workers.
Even if you haven’t the skills in demand here you can get them.

Local councils now offer courses in jobs from computer skills to trades people. All these courses are subsidised and open to anyone. Just ask at your local town hall or employment office. Speaking the language will obviously be an advantage here and when looking for work in Spain.
One other thing to remember. Years ago when I first moved here my Spanish was poor and I worked mostly for a British company for English speaking clients. Once I learned to speak Spanish I doubled my clients and doubled my earnings.

Getting up 2 hours before work and posting leaflets in doors was also how I gained more work here and this is something that most don’t do. Its just hard so they don’t do it. That’s why they say its hard to find work here, How much do you really want it and how hard are you trying.
There is work in Spain and there is some good money to be made but like any country. What can you offer and how hard are you willing to go for it.
“Your so lucky to have work here “ I hear that a lot but I find the harder I work and the more hours I put in the Luckier I get. Its only impossible if you think it is.
How and where to find work in Spain

Hi David. We moved to Spain from the US about 3 months ago, and we love it. We are renting for the first year to give us time to know the areas better and find a house we want to rehab to our liking. My husband rehabbed houses in the US for the last 10 years, and now he’s starting to look into what he needs to learn in terms of differences in Spanish vs US builds (codes, how to find reliable contractors, plumbing and electrical differences, concrete vs drywall working, etc). Is there any source(s) you’d recommend as a place to get started before we dive into our own rehab project in Spain?
