Why Did I Move To Spain

Looking out my window today and seeing the rain coming down yet again for 6 days in a row now.

Why did i move to Spain when its like this raining, wet and horrible?

It reminds me what it was like when i Lived and worked in Brighton and had to work out side in the rain repairing properties and building works.

The UK weather was the main reason i wanted to move to Spain and the rat race life style i was living back then.

So what’s different and is it really better here in Spain?

Well back then working as a carpenter and builder in Brighton Sussex, we did have some nice days and the odd summer week or so but most of the year the weather was very changeable and cloudy, windy, wet or raining or a combination of all of the above. There was never enough nice weather at the weekends when i was off to do the outdoors activities i so much loved. Back then I was earning great money in the building trade and had a nice house and car but with my wife and I both working long hard hours we didn’t really have time to enjoy our time together unless we booked a 2 week holiday and that was always abroad to try and guarantee the weather.

I still remember back then working for 4 months later afternoons when it was dark at 4pm, so very depression. The slow drive home every day sitting in the same traffic jams at the same places week in and week out.

But now in Spain is it so different?

Well i have been here 19 years now and have sat in 3 traffic jams in all those years and 2 of them were car accidents on a motorway. It doesn’t get dark here in the afternoons like that and after a days work you can still go to the beach for a few hours and that was never possible in Brighton unless you had a coat and torch.

When i was working here full time as a carpenter i still did 8 hours a day 5 days a week and sometimes 6 days when i first started but it was always in nice warm weather and bright and sunny. some times too much sun but that was better than the rain and cold. The money is less here but you need less as things are almost all cheaper than the uk in general.

Taxes are high here but i feel services are better streets are way cleaner and hospitals have amazing treatment. People say that the national health service is so great in the Uk but we forget its nit free, you still have to pay taxes and local taxes are so expensive in the UK now.

My 84 year old mum lives alone in Brighton in a bungalow and she pays over 2000 pounds a year in poll tax or what every they call it there now. She only has her rubbish collected every 2 weeks now and if she doesn’t drag her own bins to the end of her driveway they will not take her rubbish,

Here in all the places i have lived the rubbish is collected EVERY night by 1 man in a truck.

Ok so the weather here this month has been bad really bad for Spain and we have had a lot of rain BUT we know that in a few days that will clear and we will have months of hit sun and warm summer nights not a few days but months on end.

Last year we had 7 days of rain in Almeria in a YEAR. the year before that around the same. Its very dry here normally.

“The weather is not everything”

I find the people who say that are the ones who don’t live in Spain or don’t get several months of summer every year.

Of course weather is everything as it means you can do so much more and you really do feel better.

In the UK when it was damp i would have aches and pains after work that would last weeks and now when i visit the Uk on holidays those aches come back almost the moment i set foot off that plane. As i get older i feel it more. Here in Spain almost never feel that.

The diet here is more of a summer diet all year round, living in the Uk I would eat more filling foods to warm me up and give me energy to work all day on the building sites. A full English breakfast was on the cards more than once a week. Here its a treat about once a month on a Sunday morning.

Now i eat way more fish and vegetables here that we get from local markets just mins from my house every week that are not all vacuum packed in plastic. This has to be better for your health and its cheaper that’s for sure as we pay just 1 euro a kg for all our fruit and veg. SEE BELOW.

This week is an exception and anyone who has been living in Spain a few years knows that and it will clear in a few days.

In a few days we will be sitting on our terrace having breakfast with the sun on our faces and views over my new pool. we will be in the garden and i will be doing jobs around the house in T shirt and shorts for the next several months.

I have been poor in the UK and Spain, I have been wealthy with plenty of money in The UK and Spain , I have had a cheap basement flat in the uk and a basic apartment here. I have had a very nice 4 bedroom house in Brighton and now have a new house here in Spain and i can tell you that in all these cases i would rather be living my life here in Spain.

Everywhere has its pros and cons but at the end of the day when you wake up feeling great full every day then that’s the place where you belong/ For me its Spain by a mile.

I loved the UK I will always like going back to visit family but Spain offers a better healthier way of life and this is where i would rather be rain or not.

The suns coming soon…

Do you agree with this or is it just me? why did you move to Spain?
